When Sue got the call several weeks ago and said Joe and Kelly were coming down I was definitely excited to have them stay with us. When she told me it would be with 10 teenagers for 2 and a half weeks, I said "No problem. We'll make room. It'll be fine." Then as we got closer to the date, we started to get a little nervous. That'll be 19 people under one roof. Plus 4 dogs. Yikes.
When they pulled up into the driveway, it looked like a small army marching into our house. Before I knew it, the 2 and a half weeks literally flew by and I'm here writing this blog on their last night here. Kelly and Joe managed the kids and their crazy schedule like they were all one big family and had been doing it for years. Our family was spoiled with Joe's great cooking night after night. My extensive cooking knowledge consists of scrambled eggs and when I'm really daring, a spaghetti dish. The kids were great. When we got together for a barbecue at the lagoon, my dad said to me "Those are the best behaved teenagers I've ever seen." Then they set the picnic table on fire. Just kidding. It really was a great experience for our family and our kids really bonded with the team. Now that they're leaving, Sue and I were just talking about how quiet it'll be with just us here. We might have to invite friends over to bring up the volume again.

After workout we played some hacky sack.. to a record of about 5, then headed back home. A few of us went in to the pool and relaxed outside, and others of us rested inside. After lunch and some well deserved relaxation, we headed out again. We visited the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay Hotel. It was fairly small (and not quite as elaborate as the Vancouver Aquarium), but there were lots of sharks, which was pretty cool. We then went for dinner at the Hard Rock. The restaurant was really neat and we were glad we got to go there. After dinner, we walked back along the strip, stopping by at the M&M store (to re-stock on M&M's) and the souvenir shop. We then headed back home and went to sleep.

Day off? No way!

"Rest when you're weary. Refresh and renew yourself, your body, your mind, your spirit. Then get back to work."

-Ralph Marston

The weary swimmers were blessed with a day of rest, relaxation, and paddle boats. Spending time with these virtuous young teenagers brought tears to my eyes. I'm Josh Pyne, and I live in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After waking up and leaving the "beat lab," I was pleasantly surprised to find Jacqueline hugging her Ipod and searching desperately for some much needed company. Something deep in my heart told me that grilled-cheeze sandwhiches were the only cure for her early-morning funk. Our breakfast was accompanied by a deep and intriguing conversation about the many activities that we partake in. Being an aspiring gymnast, conversation about one's sports and hobbies came easily. Riayn, my younger sister, was the next person to join us in our secret escapade to the kitchen. I believe it was her brilliant idea to stretch just minutes after waking up.

Fast-forward through many pulled muscles and bleeding gums and we find ourselves on a trek towards the community center of Desert Shores. Expectations were high, but the excessive heat almost pushed the swimmers past the point of submission. The feeling of relief was overwhelming once we arrived at the lagoon. Stepping on the molten hot sand was the last obstacle in the way of pure nirvana.

Laughs were had and bonds were created throughout the day. The first trip on the paddleboats proved to be lackluster due to lack of speed and enthusiasm. Hopping on Rob's boat only cemented my hatred for these putrid creations. Rob and I kept entertained by mercilessly ramming into other boats and discussing different battle strategies. Docking the boat proved to be easy and we sprinted back to the shade for some delicious chili-dogs and purple drink. Jesse and Morgan shared my appreciation for hood-talk and related to me when I ranted about my "PURBLEE DRANKK."

The second expedition on the paddleboats was much more fun due to the inclusion of my sister Justine, her man-friend Sean, and Jacqueline. After an hour of exploring, the acquisition of Melissa and Natalia only added to the hilarity and weight on the boat. Sean serenaded us with his own rendition of Lionel Richie's, "Hello."

Arriving at the previously mentioned shaded area, we were treated to cake and song dedicated to my cousin Chase. Celebrating his birthday provided a gentle and heart-warming ending to our day at the lagoon.

Saturday, July 11

Today we had a mini dual meet with the Las Vegas swim team (Team Rebel Aquatics). It took place at the University pool and warm-up began at 8:30 and actual racing started at around 9 am. Each Chena swimmer swam 2 events from Provincials (Thursday or Friday) and 1 choice event.

Results:
13 Best times
5 Tied best times
15 Top 8 swims (comparing to results from Provincials in Kamloops)

Afterwards we went home and ate lunch. We rested at the house for the rest of the day by watching Ocean 11 (again), playing in the pool, and playing 21 (basketball game). Unfortunately Nico and Rob lost their game of 21 against Kelly and they have to swim couple laps of fly. We also had fun with the family, mainly Josh and Justine and their friend Sean. We had an early dinner of noodles and veggies. Then we headed to the Strip to watch Cirque du Soleil.

At Treasure Island, we saw the Siren's Cove and the special 'Siren' motorcycle. Then we entered the 'Mystere' theatre. When we first entered, there were two baby cariages in the middle of the stage. Before the show started, a comedian entertained us by throwing popcorn at different members of the audience.
The show 'Mystere' was extremely good. My favourite was the ariel cube where the man would do acrobatics with a metal cube frame. During the sport acro pair's performance, we saw a couple elements that Josh's friend, Nasko could duplicate. It was mind boggling to see a man hamstring curl a guy doing a handstand.
After the show we went home and slept.
